Getting Back To Family Time

If anything has taught me that we have been living as “go go go” in the past few years it’s been staying at home for the past few weeks. I’ve slowly learned that we can slow down, work and enjoy our families.

GUEST POST BY: Ivana Smolcic

The weekends where there were not enough hours in a day have turned into “what chore should we do today?”. Which, if you think about it, is not a bad thing. The fridge you wanted to clean has been cleaned. The garage that is full of junk and all over the place has slowly started to look like a garage again.

We are trying to limit our family screen time so we’ve taken up some fun tasks around the house and yard that are kid-friendly. So here are a few things we’ve been doing.

1. Gardening - This is the time of year to get out into your garden to plant for the spring, and it’s really easy to grow your own veggies at home! You might have to homeschool your kids for a few weeks, so what better science experiment than growing seeds? Local gardening shops like Art Knapp and Cedar Rim Nursery are providing local delivery and parking lot pick up. They have lists of things you can order and purchase, so why not give that green thumb a try?

Pro Tip:

Easy veggies to seed - beans, potatoes, salad, kale

Easy flowers to seed -  sweet pea, marigold

If you are looking for gardening inspiration, Garden Answer has an amazing social media account with some tips on what you can plant and how to care for the plants.

2. Baking - As busy working parents, we haven’t spent a lot of time doing home baking, but boy do we love cookies and bread! Who doesn’t? Baking does seem a little “involved” and it can be hard to know exactly where to start. But that’s ok! Even if your bundt cake doesn’t turn out exactly right, your family will have fun making it. There are so many social media accounts that have step by step instructions from cookies to cakes. You can start really simple and see what you can create!

3. Exercising - Are you one of those people who always use the excuse “I just don’t have time to workout”? Well, NO MORE EXCUSES! Getting yourself moving is good for the soul (not to mention your brain and your body). Being cooped up at home will take its toll if you don’t actively take steps to keep active - keep those brain juices flowing! Many local gyms and trainers are offering online workouts and community classes that you can easily take advantage of from the comfort of your living room. If you haven’t tried pilates or HIIT fitness, it’s a great way to start exercising or try something that you haven’t tried before.
